Hector's Hedgehog Rescue is an incorporated non-profit African Algerian Hedgehog Rescue dedicated to the care and education of domestic hedgehogs. We are also members of the Hedgehog Welfare Society (http://www.hedgehogwelfare.org/). We provide a loving home for hedgehogs in need. We accept surrenders and may provide adoptions to suitable candidates. Some of our hogs are part of our forever home as they have special needs.
Please take a look through our hedgehog care information and photo gallery. If you are in need of a bucket wheel (and would prefer not to pay shipping from the States), we sometimes have some available at the cost of the parts. We also accept donations of wheel materials (so that we can continue to provide wheels to other rescues across North America). Please visit our "How I can Help" section for more details!
Thanks for stopping by!
Who is Hector?
Hector was an albino hedgehog rescued from an industrial fire in Northern Alberta. He came to us in the hopes he would be able to rehabilitate. He was our first official rescue. He was petrified of humans and was completely blind.
He spent the next year and a half with us and became fearless. Besides the few burnt quillls that he had for the rest of his life, the fire became a distant memory. Every evening he took charge of our livingroom and ran for 3-4 hours dodging objects as easily as one who could see perfectly. He was passionate about food, preferring wild halibut topped with fresh papaya. He passed away on Easter 2009 but remains the fearless warrior mascot of our rescue.
